Job Description

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF WORK

This is a skilled technical work in the configuration, maintenance and installation of new and existing radio communications equipment. Work involves installing, maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing two-way radios, as well as performing additions, moves and changes of trunked and conventional two-way radios. Work requires some knowledge of the theory and principles involved and the ability to apply acquired skills in developing better overall maintenance and installation techniques and utilization of equipment. An employee of this class is expected to exercise independent judgment in determining systems and job requirements regarding the various phases of maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and installation of two-way radio equipment. Work is performed under the general direction of a technical superior who reviews work through reports and observation of work results.

ESSENTIAL EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The following illustrates examples of some of the essential duties and responsibilities of the Electronic Technician I. There may be other essential functions, not listed below, in order to accomplish the tasks as presented by the Telecommunication Manager I.

  • Installs new or used two-way radio equipment on Police, Fire and Public Works vehicles, trucks and heavy machinery.
  • Removes and relocates two-way radio equipment on Police, Fire and Public works vehicles, trucks and heavy machinery.
  • Installs, removes and relocates stationary two-way radio equipment in City facilities, Fire Stations, Police Stations.
  • Performs daily preventive maintenance of two-way radio equipment on Police, Fire and Public Works vehicles and facilities with stationary radio equipment.
  • Prepares RF cabling and connections for installations, removals and relocation of radio equipment.
  • Performs installation and maintenance of mounting camera hardware and related equipment.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, repairs and maintains antennas on vehicles and facilities with stationary equipment.
  • Utilizes specialized test equipment such as voltmeters, watt meters, RF loads, frequency counters, signal generators, scopes and service monitors.
  • Utilizes power tools such as cordless drills, bench drills, and press.
  • Utilizes hand tools such as screwdrivers, crimpers, compression crimpers, soldering irons, pliers, cutters, files, utility knives, hammers.
  • Drives to and from facilities to pick up and deliver radio equipment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles and theories of two-way radio communications, RF, materials, test equipment, diagrams, service manuals, procedures, standards, and practices used in the field of electronics installation and maintenance.
  • Knowledge and understanding of interoperable communications and deployment of interoperable communications equipment.
  • Knowledge of the methods, practices, tools and materials used in two-way radio troubleshooting, repair, preventive and corrective maintenance.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, repair and perform preventive and corrective maintenance of two-way radio equipment and installations.
  • Ability to install, remove and relocate two-way radio equipment in vehicles and buildings.
  • Ability to interpret and work from technical instructions, technical diagrams, drawings and blueprints.
  • Ability to work at some heights in conjunction with antenna installation, preventive and corrective maintenance of antennas in buildings.
  • Ability to understand and carry out directions, both oral and written; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
  • Dependable and in good physical condition.
  • Skill in the use of various shop tools, power tools and test equipment.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Windows based computers and applications such as Word and Excel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The following are some of the physical requirements associated with this position. Reasonable accommodation may be made by the City to enable an individual to perform the essential duties/functions of the position.

  • Must have ability to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, stand, hear, hands to finger dexterity, handle, feel or operate objects, read and write English.
  • Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office equipment; such as but not limited to a personal computer, calculator, copier and fax machines.
  • Work is performed indoors within a quiet to moderately noisy environment.
  • Must be able to lift, carry and or push articles weighing up to 20 lbs.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • A standard High School diploma or GED, supplemented by vocational school training in the field of electronics, specialized factory training in two-way radio communications or;
  • Two (2) years of experience in the installation and preventive maintenance of two-way radio equipment and electronics; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
