Job Description

The Director of Pharmacy directs and manages the pharmacy services in accordance with the objectives of the Hospital’s Administrative and Medical Staff while adhering to the legal, regulatory, and accrediting agency standards.

  1. Essential Functions of the Role: Supervise and manage the day-to-day pharmacy services to ensure that pharmaceutical services are provided in an accurate and expedient manner. Develop, justify, lead and manage pharmacy programs and services to improve patient care. Integrate pharmacy services with other hospital departments and the medical staff to establish a multidisciplinary approach to improving patient care. Assure compliance with standards of practice from accreditation organizations, including but not limited to the Joint Commission.

  1. Develop and recommend departmental policies, procedures, and programs to ensure departmental effectiveness. Assure compliance with all legal and +regulatory requirements for pharmacy operations including, but not limited to Food and Drug Administration, Drug Enforcement Administration and Office of Pharmacy Affairs.

  1. Establish appropriate staffing levels and positions to achieve departmental and hospital objectives. Select, train, evaluate, and, when necessary, discipline or discharge departmental personnel.

  1. Oversee the procurement, storage, preparation, dispensing, recording and control for all drugs used in the hospital, including controlled substances.

  1. Develop and recommend department operating budget and ensure that the department operates within the budget. Prepare and administer the pharmacy capital equipment budget. Seek innovative ways to reduce/contain costs and ensure quality services. Assure that appropriate charge capture and billing systems for pharmacy charges are developed and maintained.

  1. Confer with the Vice President of Patient Care and the Chair of Drugs, Nutrition and Therapeutics (DNT) Committee to develop short and long-term goals. Coordinate activities and serve as Secretary of the DNT Committee.

  1. Function in the role of a registered pharmacist to provide distributive and clinical pharmaceutical services.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs both essential and marginal job functions in a safe manner as identified by Saint Anthony Hospital and the respective department while adhering to the Hospital’s confidentiality norms and standards. Actively and consistently demonstrates the core values of Saint Anthony Hospital in all interactions with others.

  • Assumes responsibility for knowing and maintaining established hospital and departmental objectives, policies/procedures including general sanitation, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

  • Participates in performance activities including problem identification, data collection, solution selection, implementation and evaluation. Also assists in the care and maintenance of departmental equipment and supplies as appropriate.

  • Participates in staff meetings and other in-services, meetings or committees as required.

  • Plan and provide professional development opportunities for pharmacy staff.

  • General Job Requirements: Licensed Pharmacist,; Preference for completion of a pharmacy residency program and an advanced degree program (M.S., M.B.A., or Ph.D.)
  • Management experience in a healthcare/hospital environment.
  • Comfortable with staffing duties.
  • Ability to solve problems, establish trust and credibility.
  • Deal effectively with change.
  • Good organizational skills.
