THE POSITION
To perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of water lines, sewers, storm drains, and pump stations. The purpose of this recruitment is to fill multiple vacancies in the Sanitary Sewer/Storm Drainage Systems Division, as well as establish an eligibility list for future vacancies. Initial position and salary of the selected candidate will be based on previous work experience and valid licenses/certificates.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
The City of Woodland is looking to fill multiple Utilities Maintenance Worker I/II positions in the Public Works Sanitary Sewer/Storm Drainage Systems Division. The Ideal Candidate for the current vacancy is someone who has a good understanding of all aspects of underground sewer/storm drain maintenance and repairs, and is familiar with the operation of light and heavy equipment. This position requires a “team player” with good interpersonal, time management, and communication skills. Candidate must be able to follow direction and display good judgment, as well as be organized, flexible, approachable, resourceful, and a positive team contributor. Current and valid distribution certifications and Class A/B commercial driver’s license are highly desirable.
Utilities Maintenance Worker I:
This is the entry level class in the Utilities Maintenance Worker series. The Utilities Maintenance Worker I may often perform many of the duties required of Utilities Maintenance Workers II but is not expected to have the depth of experience, skill level and certifications of the Utilities Maintenance Worker II. As a result, the Utilities Maintenance Worker I will have fewer opportunities to exercise independent discretion and judgment on matters related to work procedures and methods.
Utilities Maintenance Worker II:
This is the Journey level in the Utilities Maintenance Worker series. This class differs from Utilities Maintenance Worker I in that incumbent perform more complex maintenance duties including working independently, exercising judgment, and operating the full range of tools and mechanical equipment related to a specific assignment. The Utilities Maintenance Worker II may also be expected to assist in the oversight and training of less experienced personnel. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level, or by candidates with prior work experience elsewhere.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The following are typical illustrations of duties encompassed by the job class; this is not an all-inclusive or limiting list:
Operate a variety of light and moderately heavy construction and maintenance equipment such as a loader, dump truck, water truck, steel rollers, High Velocity Vacuum Cleaner, mole trencher, and rubber-tired tractor with all attachments; Operate a forklift as assigned and trained; Perform general maintenance and repair on water distribution and/or storm and wastewater collection facilities including (but not limited to) installation, testing, and backfill of service laterals.
Use the Closed-Circuit Television Truck, sewer cable machine, flush sewer laterals and mains, assist in sewer tap installations, clean storm drain lines and catch basins
Operate equipment and vehicles with possession of all necessary licenses and certificates; Take meter and gauge readings; Accurately maintain records and reports; Utilize proper safety precautions related to all performed work; Comply with the policies and procedures in the department Injury & Illness Prevention Program (IIPP); Regular, predictable, consistent and timely attendance is an essential function of the position, in that the employee must be present to work on facilities and equipment impacting on the public’s health and safety
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
Respond to inquiries from the general public; Prepare as-built sketches when required to convey information to engineering for graphic documentation; Check water meters for proper operation; Troubleshoot registers and repair as necessary; Initiate and discontinue water service to customer accounts as directed; Operate telemetering and flow monitoring equipment; Work cooperatively with others; Perform related duties as assigned; Both assignments will require employees to be “On Call” as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
Utilities Maintenance Worker I
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Courses in, or graduation from, the American Public Works Association’s Public Works Institute is desirable
Experience: One (1) year of experience in construction or related field.

$2,194.36 - $2,800.63 /bi-weekly

Future Salary COLAs:
1% increase (effective January 2026)
Retirement:
CalPERS Retirement System (2 % @ 60 formula for Classic CalPERS members and 2% @ 62 formula for new CalPERS members). The City does not participate in social security
Deferred Comp:
Choice of deferred compensation plans (Traditional and Roth) with 1% City-match. After successful completion of probation, new hires are also eligible for a 2% City contribution.
Medical:
CalPERS Medical Insurance Plans, including HMOs and PPOs. City gives an allowance toward the cost of insurance. Maximum Family Medical Allowance (2025): $2,463.99 per month
