Metropolitan State Hospital is located in the City of Norwalk.

The Department of State Hospitals, Metropolitan State Hospital is currently accepting applications for Unit Supervisor (Safety), Permanen t/Full Time.

Under direction of the Nursing Coordinator in a state hospital, the Unit Supervisor (US) (Safety) incumbent is responsible for the overall management and supervision of an organized unit on a 24-hour basis in a state hospital providing care to patients; is responsible for the nursing care and practices of an organized nursing unit or for a nursing service; plans, implements, evaluates, and provides for continuity of patient care; works with other disciplines to integrate nursing services to provide a total treatment program; and teaches, plans, directs, supervises, and evaluates nursing personnel.  In the performance of custody responsibilities, observes and intervenes in instances of disruptive or assaultive behavior; supervises and as needed assists subordinate staff in safety and security measures; practices in unit safety and security inspections.  Good leadership, clear communication and ability to work well with others is highly desired. 

Candidates must be willing to work in any Unit/Program and any Shift to meet the needs of the facility.

Minimum Qualifications:
Either I Possession of the legal requirements to practice as a professional Registered Nurse in California as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing.

Or II
Possession of a valid license to practice as a Psychiatric Technician issued by the California Board of Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technicians. and Experience: One year of experience performing the duties of a nursing classification comparable in level of responsibility to a Registered Nurse, Range B or Senior Psychiatric Technician classification in the direction of the nursing services for a California developmental center, State hospital, Psychiatric Program, or correctional facility level-of-care unit during a shift.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

1. One year experience in a full time SPT/RN/RNSL position and completed their probationary period.
2. No "Improvement needed" in their most recent Performance Appraisal Summary/Review
