Job Summary: The Residential Service Plumber assembles, installs, alters, and repairs clogs, leaks, and other problems with piping systems. This plumber troubleshoots and inspects systems using leak detection and sewer cameras. This plumber may install water heaters, water filtration, piping systems and fixtures.

Exemption Status: Non-exempt

Position Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Shuts off water and gas from pipe sections, using valve keys or wrenches.
  • Installs underground storm, sanitary, or water piping systems, extending piping as needed to connect fixtures and plumbing.
  • Assembles pipe sections, tubing, or fittings, using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement, plastic solvent, caulking, or soldering, brazing, or welding equipment.
  • Locates and marks the position of pipe installations, connections, passage holes, or fixtures in structures, using measuring instruments such as rulers or levels.
  • Cuts, threads, and/or hammers pipes to specifications, using tools such as saws, cutting torches, pipe threaders, or pipe benders.
  • Plans pipe system layout, installation, or repair, according to specifications.
  • Reviews blueprints, building codes, or specifications to determine work details or procedures.
  • Selects pipe sizes, types, or related materials, such as supports, hangers, or hydraulic cylinders, according to specifications.
  • Fills pipes or plumbing fixtures with water or air and observe pressure gauges to detect and locate leaks.
  • Directs helpers engaged in pipe cutting, preassembly, or installation of plumbing systems or components.
  • Inspects, examines, or tests installed systems or pipelines, using pressure gauge, hydrostatic testing, observation, or other methods.
  • Installs pipe assemblies, fittings, valves, appliances such as dishwashers or water heaters, or fixtures such as sinks or toilets, using hand or power tools.
  • Anchors steel supports from ceiling joists to hold pipes in place.
  • Attaches pipes to walls, structures, or fixtures, such as radiators or tanks, using brackets, clamps, tools, or welding equipment.
  • Modifies, cleans, or maintains pipe systems, units, fittings, or related machines or equipment, using hand or power tools.
  • Installs automatic controls to regulate pipe systems.
  • Estimates time, material, or labor costs for use in project plans.

    Keeps records of work assignments.
  • Inspects structures to assess material or equipment needs, to establish the sequence of pipe installations, or to plan installation around obstructions, such as electrical wiring.
  • Maintains or repairs plumbing by replacing defective washers, replacing or mending broken pipes, or opening clogged drains.
  • Repairs or removes and replace system components.
  • Cuts openings in structures to accommodate pipes or pipe fittings, using hand or power tools.
  • Installs green plumbing equipment, such as faucet flow restrictors, dual-flush or pressure-assisted flush toilets, or tankless hot water heaters.
  • Inspects work sites for obstructions or holes that could cause structural weakness.
  • Installs pipe systems to support alternative energy-fueled systems, such as geothermal heating or cooling systems.
  • Installs fixtures, appliances, or equipment designed to reduce water or energy consumption.
  • Welds small pipes or special piping, using specialized techniques, equipment, or materials, such as computer-assisted welding or microchip fabrication.
  • Operates motorized pumps to remove water from flooded manholes, basements, or facility floors.
  • Performs other business-related duties, as required.

Education and Experience:

  • Current Tradesman or Journeyman License
  • Hands-on residential plumbing field experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Bend or twist body, 90 degrees in either direction
  • Stand on all surfaces for long periods of time.
  • Work in tight, uncomfortable spaces as needed.
  • Squat and touch floor with hands
  • Use hands to handle, control or feel objects, tools and/or controls.
  • Climb ladder, scaffolds and/or poles safely.
  • Use repetitive motions.
  • Walk and/or move for long periods of time.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs., in addition to body weight
  • Reach over head with ease.
  • Ability to safely utilize fixed ladders, as needed.
  • Complete job with safety in mind for all involved and communicate any issues to the assigned SME that could lead to safety concerns prior to completing tasks.
  • Work long hours during peak seasons.
