Job Description

Description We are seeking a detail‑oriented and proactive Property Accountant to manage the accounting and financial reporting for a portfolio of real estate assets (commercial, retail, multi‑family, or mixed‑use). This role will support the full monthly close, vendor & tenant accounting, and ensure compliance with internal controls and external regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate will partner with property management, asset management, and corporate accounting teams. Key Responsibilities + Maintain the general ledger for one or more properties or portfolios; prepare monthly journal entries and reconciliations. + Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow) for property/portfolio owners. + Handle accounts payable and accounts receivable for property level including vendor invoices, tenant billing/receipts, and reimbursements. + Perform variance analysis against budget and prior period and provide explanations to management. + Assist with the month‑end and year‑end close processes including audit support and tax provision schedules if applicable. + Monitor and maintain fixed asset records, depreciation schedules, leasehold improvements; assist with capital expenditure tracking. + Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal accounting controls, and, where applicable, real estate industry specific regulations (e.g., property management, lease accounting). + Collaborate with property managers and asset managers to ensure proper budgeting, cost control and timely financial information. + Drive process improvements: streamline accounting workflows, implement best practices for property accounting. + Ad hoc analysis and special projects as required (e.g., property acquisitions, dispositions, system implementations). Requirements Qualifications + Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field. + Typically 3‑7 years of accounting experience in real estate, property management, or investment real estate environment (more for senior roles). + Strong proficiency in accounting software and systems (experience with property‑management platforms like Yardi, MRI or Timberline is a plus). + Excellent Excel skills and ability to analyze financial data. + Strong verbal and written communication, able to liaise with non‑finance stakeholders (property managers, asset managers, owners). + Highly detail‑oriented with the ability to work in a dynamic/fast‑paced real estate environment. + Experience with journal entries, reconciliations, financial reporting, fixed assets and supporting audits. + Familiarity with real estate accounting practices is preferred; CPA designation is a plus (but not always required).
