Then come join our passionate team at Childhood Lead Poisoning and Prevention Branch who focus on prevention services to children with lead poisoning, lead exposure or risk of lead exposure.

This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by working to protect California children from lead poisoning and the adverse effects from exposure to lead.

The incumbent works under the general direction of the Public Health Medical Officer (PHMO) III, Chief, Care Management Section (CMS) – Direct Services and Outreach to Health Care Providers. The Public Health Nurse (PHN) II will perform the most complex, difficult, and sensitive public health nursing activities in connection with the prevention and management of California children with potential or actual exposure to lead. The PHN II will provide direct case management, coordinate case management services and activities, and provide case management reporting related to children with lead poisoning. The PHN II will oversee and manage case management partnerships with other agencies; develop care management related policies, procedures, and materials, and collaborate with PHMO II on medical provider outreach in local health jurisdictions in California without a contracted childhood lead poisoning prevention program . This position requires moderate travel (up to 60%) throughout California for home visits and occasional meetings with occasional overnight stays as required.

License Requirement for both the PHN II and PHN I

Possession of a valid license as a registered nurse and a valid certificate as a public health nurse in California.

The California Department of State Hospitals administers the Public Health Nurse (PHN) II. Interested applicants, who currently do not have list eligibility or are not eligible for transfer, must apply for and take the PHN II exam with the Department of State Hospitals to obtain list eligibility. Working Conditions

Telework Information     

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework permitted is at the discretion of the Department and is subject to change, consistent with CDPH’s Telework Program. All employees who telework are required to be California residents in accordance with Government Code 14200. Candidates who reside outside of the state of California may be interviewed; however, the selected candidate must have a primary residency in the state of California prior to appointment (and continue to maintain California residency) as a condition of employment. Failure to meet this requirement may result in the job offer being rescinded.

Travel may be required for this position. Reimbursement for travel takes into consideration an employee’s designated headquarters, as reflected in the duty statement, and is subject to regulations and bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the designated headquarters office will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

***Will also consider Temporary Authorization Utilization (TAU) appointments- Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications for the classification but do not currently have eligibility on an employment certification list by having taken and passed an examination may apply as a TAU. TAU appointments are limited to a duration of 9 months within a 12 consecutive month period. In order for a TAU appointment to become permanent, individuals must take and pass the related examination, and thereby become eligible from a certification list, within 9 months of TAU appointment. Individuals who successfully obtain eligibility prior to the expiration of the TAU appointment will not be required to re-compete in a competitive process for permanent appointment to that position.***

• Experience in public health field nursing and case management
• Interest in working with a diverse multi-cultural population
• Excellent writing and verbal communication skills
• Experience working collaboratively with other agencies and disciplines
• Bilingual English/Spanish is desirable as this program serves a diverse population including a large Spanish speaking population
