Job Description

The Company

Cellino is building a precision platform that personalizes human cells for all. Stem cell-derived regenerative medicines are poised to cure some of the toughest diseases within this decade, including Parkinson’s, diabetes, and heart disease. Patient-specific cells provide the safest, most effective cures for these indications. Currently, large scale production of stem cell therapies is challenging due to extensive manual handling, high variability, and expensive manufacturing costs. Cellino’s vision is to enable healthier lives worldwide with personalized human cells.

The Role

Cellino is seeking a highly skilled Genetic Engineer to lead efforts in generating, testing, and optimizing transgenic activation strategies in a therapeutically relevant human cell type, as part of Cellino’s new therapeutic development goals. This role will be integral to developing a novel autologous cell therapy for metabolic indications, leveraging state-of-the-art gene editing techniques to drive controlled cell activation. The successful candidate will design and implement genome engineering strategies, optimize delivery and selection approaches, and establish robust workflows for characterizing a set of potential targets to drive transgenic activation. This position requires a deep expertise in gene editing techniques, strong experimental skills in editing mammalian cells and establishing editing workflows, and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment. This role reports to the Head of Bioengineering.

Responsibilities

  • Establish, characterize, and optimize core gene editing methodologies and workflows at Cellino, laying the foundation for future gene editing projects.
  • Design and test a set of transgenic activation strategies for human adipocytes, with goal of target selection
  • Establish key analytical assays to assess editing efficiency (PCR, NGS) and cell phenotypes (qPCR, ELISA, metabolic measurements) correlated with therapeutic mechanism in collaboration with the analytical development team
  • Collaborate with our interdisciplinary team in integrating precision gene editing into Cellino’s optical bioprocessing platform.
  • Act as a technical lead for gene-editing at Cellino, defining the development strategy & key milestones for projects in alignment with stakeholders.

Requirements

  • PhD in molecular biology, genetic engineering, synthetic biology, biological engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience with cutting-edge gene editing techniques in mammalian cells, including cell culture, molecular biology, CRISPR, TALENs, viral & non-viral delivery methods, selection strategies, and analytical tools for characterizing edits.
  • Strong experiment design & data analysis skills, and related Python literacy.
  • Strong experiment planning & communication skills, with ability to convey technical concepts effectively to team members with diverse technical backgrounds.
  • A problem-solving mindset to biology, and a keen interest in learning new skills in engineering, automation, and machine learning.

Preferred Skills and Background

  • Experience with culture and gene editing of hPSCs/hiPSCs
  • Familiarity with metabolic diseases and adipocytes
  • Experience with establishing & using bioinformatic workflows to assess NGS data to validate edits (and other NGS data applications)
