**GENETIC COUNSELOR**
**SUMMARY:**
In collaboration with physicians, provides high-level independent genetic counseling. Clinically assess and counsel individuals and families regarding genetics and risk management. Provides education to patients and families as well as to physicians and the community.
**REQUIREMENTS:**
+ Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC) required, or obtained within 12 months from hire date.
+ American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) certification required within 12 Minimum of one-year experience in Genetic Counseling preferred.
+ State of Idaho provisional/regular license required, or obtained within 12 months of hire.
**WHAT YOU WILL DO:**
+ Ensure the accuracy of documenting services and supplies provided to the patients.
+ Works in collaboration with individual Programs and with referring physicians to ensure provision of appropriate care.
+ Obtains and evaluates the family histories of the patient and patient's family members to provide genetic evaluation.
+ Discusses with the patient and the family the features, natural history, means of diagnosis, genetic and environmental factors, and management of risk for pre-disposition syndromes or genetic conditions.
+ Identifies, coordinates, and obtains informed consent for genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic studies as appropriate for genetic assessment.
+ Integrates the results of genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic tests with individual and family medical histories.
+ Explains to a patient and the patient's family the clinical implications of the results of genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic tests.
+ Provides risk analysis and calculation.
+ Discusses informed consent, privacy issues, and confidentiality and discrimination concerns with patients.
+ Provides post-test counseling and support, including review of medical management options.
+ Provides accurate, appropriate and timely reports for patient records and to referring physicians.
+ Identifies and uses community resources that provide medical, educational, financial, psychosocial support and advocacy.
+ Provides genetics education to other health care professionals.
