Job Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

This position implements fiber optic cable routes pertaining to construction, installation, and splicing for network and customer work orders. Obtains material via provided work orders and purchase orders, follow detailed construction and/or splicing instructions and method of procedure for all installations and service-affecting projects. Constructs and/or configure the appropriate fiber facilities by following detailed work orders. Notifies supervisor of low or inadequate fiber facilities via as-builts and makes recommendations from on-site observations. Helps maintain fiber optic facility records by providing detailed updates after the work orders have been implemented.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

  • Implements, installs, tests, splices, and maintains fiber optic cable routes.
  • Helps manage network projects by ensuring work orders are completed on schedule.
  • Provides site inspection and as-builts for both new and maintenance projects.
  • Performs route surveillance.
  • Helps produce preliminary engineering and costs by gathering information as needed to support engineering.
  • Schedules splicing based on network and customer requirements.
  • Provides technical support to operations and installation, personnel, and other departments as necessary.
  • Maintains engineering standards and procedures via good construction, installation, and splicing practices.
  • Performs minimal supervisory functions for newer, less experienced technicians.
  • Performs special projects and other duties as may be assigned by Fiber Optic Supervisor.
  • May be required to work overtime or alternate hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
  • Position is Mission Critical.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs related work as required.
  • QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE) AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma from an accredited school or a GED and Technical or Trade School Course Certification(s) pertaining to Fiber Installation, Splicing, and/or Testing.
  • Four (4) years of experience in Telecom.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, abilities, and other competencies necessary for success in the target position.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Must maintain a valid telephone number.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Strong working knowledge of the telecommunications industry with necessity in fiber splicing and testing and aerial and underground construction methods.
  • In-depth knowledge of voice and data communications.
  • Ability to quickly solve problems as they arise.
  • Experience in being able to locate underground infrastructure, including routes that contain di-electric fiber optic cables.
  • Experience in being able to complete mechanical and fusion splicing.
  • Experience in testing, troubleshooting, and providing acceptance testing of fiber optic routes.
  • Possess exceptional interpersonal abilities and oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and deal effectively with the stress of a rapidly changing environment.
  • Experience in operating equipment related to construction, cable locating, and fiber splicing and testing.
  • Have a professional understanding of PC’s to retrieve work orders, project plans, and produce as-builts.
  • Experience in understanding and implementing outside plant networks and work orders as they pertain to construction, cable installation, and splicing.
