POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Human Resources (HR) serves as a strategic business partner to the Club, management team, and all employees, aligning HR strategies with organizational goals to drive performance, engagement, and operational success. This role requires a forward-thinking approach to workforce planning, employee experience, and leadership development, ensuring that HR is not just a support function, but an integral part of the Club’s business strategy.

The Director of Human Resources will plan, implement, and coordinate the strategy, policies, and activities of the Human Resources department, ensuring legal compliance and best practices in all areas. The Director of HR is responsible for all aspects of employee and employment related issues, including but not limited to recruiting and onboarding, performance management and offboarding, payroll and benefit administration, employee relations, engagement and culture, communications, and legal compliance. The ideal candidate is an accomplished and seasoned HR professional who has the ability to think strategically and proactively, while also being involved in the day-to-day HR responsibilities, and personal employee interactions.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Recruitment and Onboarding

  • Oversees all recruiting in coordination with department heads; plans recruitment strategies for seasonal and year round employees, develops and places recruitment ads; assists in screening applicants, reference verification, scheduling interviews, hiring recommendations and offer letters.
  • Oversees all new hire onboarding and orientation; provides general HR orientation and Club information for all new employees; assists in the coordination of department orientations.

Payroll and Benefits Administration

  • Oversees weekly payroll, ensuring payroll includes accurate compensation and withholdings.
  • Maintains payroll system and employee files, including all required documentation for new hires, merit increases, status changes, discipline and performance management, exit interviews and termination.
  • Administers the Club’s group insurance and retirement benefits, communicates eligibility requirements and plan information to staff and provides staff assistance as necessary; assists in the review of monthly benefit invoices for accuracy of billings and benefit withholdings.

Compliance and Reporting

  • Administers all leave requests, including compliance with required documentation.
  • Administers unemployment claims and work-related injury claims including accident investigation, on-going case management, and reporting; maintains OSHA logs and reports for required reporting.
  • Administers all year-end and regulatory compliance reporting, including payroll, ACA, EEOC, and OSHA filings, and 401K annual audit and required reporting.
  • Administers Clubs use of employment visa programs, including H2B and J1 visas.
  • Prepares labor and staffing reports as necessary to assist managers with labor management; assists in the preparation of annual labor and benefit budgets.

Employee Relations and Performance Management

  • Assists and advises department heads in employee performance management and disciplinary issues, including coaching, discipline, performance reviews and performance improvement plans.
  • Oversees employee relationship management, administers investigations and employee meetings, and responds to employee questions and concerns timely.
  • Proactively engages employees and managers to continually monitor club culture, cohesiveness, engagement, and overall staff experience.
  • Oversees employee engagement, including employee recognition, employee functions and other engagement activities; assists in the development of employee motivation and retention programs.
  • Oversees all companywide employee communications, including the coordination and publication of an employee newsletter, employee email correspondence, and maintenance of employee boards and notifications.

Leadership, Business Partnership and Strategy

  • Act as a trusted advisor to the management team, providing data-driven insights and HR solutions that align with the Club’s objectives.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and organized employee documentation, including employee files, job descriptions, and organizational chart.
  • Continually reviews and assists in updating the employee handbook and personnel related policies
  • Develops, recommends, and implements human resource policies and procedures, including employee training programs for management and staff. Participates in development of departmental goals and objectives.
  • Conducts labor analysis and benchmarking with others in the Club industry and local area, and other studies as necessary; explore new strategies as appropriate. Monitors payroll metrics.
  • Ensures appropriate record keeping and compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local employment laws. Stays current on employment trends and advises club management as necessary.
  • Troubleshoots issues with HRIM providers; participates in the evaluation of HRIM systems
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer and General Manager/COO.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelors degree in Human Resources and 5 or more years minimum related payroll and human resource experience in a similar role. History of progressive HR experience in club or hospitality industry is preferred. Basic business acumen and a strong knowledge of payroll and benefits administration and NJ labor laws.
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish is preferred.
  • Professional certification (SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP) is preferred.
  • Strong computer skills required: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook. Familiarity with Paycom (or other equivalent HRIS software program) required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal, with an approachable and engaging demeanor.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and remain flexible and responsive.
  • Ability to exercise good time management skills and to thrive working autonomously.
  • Ability to be visible and interactive with club staff, as well as serve successfully as a member of collaborative club management team.
  • Detail oriented with good judgement, problem solving and sound decision-making skills.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism, integrity, and confidentiality.

PHYSICAL & ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

Most work is performed indoors, at a desk, in an office environment. The job requires prolonged sitting for long periods of time in front of a computer. In performance of the duties and responsibilities of this job an employee will be required to see, talk and hear, with the ability for fine manipulation and keyboarding. There also may be occasional walking, standing, bending, lifting, squatting, overhead reaching, and kneeling.
