Job Description and Duties

The Chief, Habitat Conservation Planning Branch, CEA A , under the general direction of the Deputy Director of the Ecosystem Conservation Division, serves as a member of the Department’s Executive Team, and participates in or advises standing or ad hoc policy and operations committees, and select strategic planning and organizational teams advising the Deputy Director and Department’s Executive Team. The Habitat Conservation Planning Branch Chief develops and implements complex and sensitive statewide habitat conservation policies and programs including natural community conservation planning, environmental review and permitting, conservation banking, invasive species, timberland conservation planning, native plant conservation, and conservation and recovery of rare, threatened, endangered and special concern plants, animals and native habitats. The position coordinates with Department branches and regions to formulate reviews and administer and communicate policies, legislation, and regulations affecting a wide variety of constituents including businesses, industry, environmental groups, and the scientific community. The position represents the Department before the legislature, government boards, and commissions and may act as the Deputy Director, in his/her absence.

The Habitat Conservation Planning Branch Chief also:

  • Works with other State, Federal, and local government agencies, private organizations, and constituent groups to strategically develop and implement the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (CDFW) conservation policies and programs.
  • Manages Branch programs within fiscal resources and develops strategies and processes to improve budget efficiency including identification of alternate funding sources.
  • Promotes CDFW’s commitment to and accountability for the preservation and protection of the State’s resources through fair and consistent application of laws and responsiveness to the public.
  • Utilizes strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills to ensure continuing team development with the Branch, CDFW, and constituency groups and inspires the use of these skills by staff.

  5. Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with a variety of public, private, local, State, and Federal government entities and stakeholders involved with California’s fish and wildlife issues.
